Akenataa Hammagaadji

The person behind the online African music radio program, First World Music, was born in Monrovia, Liberia. After college, he hosted an African music program on Columbia University's WKCR station. He hosts First World Music on WVKR, and is a co-host on AfrobeatRadio on WBAI 99.5 FM, showcasing musicians from the African continent and the African world.

Ernest "Chico" Alvarez

A Cuban-American author, songwriter, vocalist, and bandleader who currently leads his own band, Ran Kan Kán. He has been a performer for the last five decades and was also the host of a long-running radio show, "New World Gallery", which aired from 1986 until 2017 on WBAI radio (99.5 FM). He also hosted music radio shows on RADIO WADO (AM) and WHCR (Harlem Community Radio), FM. He was a staff writer for LATIN NY Magazine and LATIN BEAT Magazine in California and his most recent essays can be viewed at

Emmanuel Nado

Journalist, radio producer/host, and podcaster at, Emmanuel is at the forefront of promoting African music and culture in the Northern California San Francisco Bay Area. Through his interviews with African groups and artists, and published articles on African music, he has been an active force in the scene in the U.S. since the early '90s.

Nnamdi Moweta

A radio personality, music producer, music supervisor, music promoter, and consultant. He is the host of Radio Afrodicia, a radio show on KPFK, a listener-sponsored radio station based in Los Angeles, California. With an audience of approximately 50,000 listeners weekly, Moweta is the only African-born radio host in Los Angeles, California. In 2011, Moweta was featured on a Reuters Africa Journal segment about African DJs in the United States.

Wuyi Jacobs

Wuyi Jacobs is the founder of AfrobeatRadio and exec director, producer/co-host of AfrobeatRadio on WBAI 99.5 FM.
